Over the week of Pi Day, Spalding students in the Math National Honor Society organized pi-themed activities and competitions for other students to participate in.
On Monday, students had the opportunity to participate in one of two events: a competition to recite the most digits of pi or a fun activity solving pi-themed word puzzles. Congratulations to Spalding junior Max Lemke for reciting the most digits of pi!
On Tuesday, students completed a digital escape room challenge, solving pi-related problems to escape the room. On Wednesday, students were given math riddles focusing on pi and related topics. For example, one riddle describes a pizza with a radius of ten inches, prompting students to find the area of the pizza and one of its five slices.
On Thursday, students selected two math teachers to be “pi”-ed in the face: Mrs. Mach and Mrs. Urdiales-Myers. The “pi”-eing was broadcast on SPAM for all students to watch at the end of homeroom.
The Pi Day week activities were well attended by Spalding students, and some even received extra credit from their math teachers for participating! All of these activities were organized by Math NHS students and moderators. Students worked hard under Ms. Pedder’s and Mrs. Meyers’ direction, teaming up to design creative riddles, puzzles, and other challenges, and facilitating these activities during homeroom.
When asked about her time helping with these events, Math NHS member Savannah Moore said, “I really enjoyed the opportunity to work together with my friends in Math NHS to share our love for math with the school through the Pi Day activities.” Savannah helped with multiple Pi Day activities, including the competition where students recited digits of pi. She remembers that activity as being particularly fun and competitive for participants. Overall, the Pi Day activities were a fun and engaging experience for both participating students and Math NHS members
