On Friday, November 14, 2025, our theater opened with its fall production of You Can’t Take It With You. Directed by Lauren Schene, the play brought the worlds of the chaotic Sycamore family and the “proper” Kirby family together when their children, Alice and Tony, fall in love. When the Kirbs visit the Sycamore house for dinner, everything goes wrong for Alice, with unexpected guests, her family’s crazy hobbies, and their pet snake.
Our wonderful cast did an amazing job with each of their characters, from the Sycamores’ wild and crazy lifestyles and personalities to the Kirbys’ shocked reactions. They made sure that something was always happening on stage, whether it was a firework going off, a horrible ballet in the living room, or Grandpa invading taxes. The set, costumes, and amazing actors filled the house with personality and created a lively atmosphere for the show.
As with every Spalding production, many students worked both on and off the stage for the show. Students built the set, complete with a swinging door for the kitchen and stairs to run up in anger, ran the lights and sound, and organized the many props needed for this show. All the participants put in a tremendous amount of time and effort to bring the show together, making it an enjoyable experience.
You Can’t Take It With You was an excellent way to start off our 2025-2026 season, and it showcased the creativity and dedication of the Spalding Theater. We are all looking forward to the musical in the spring, Something Rotten.
