A Spalding alumnus of the class of 2001, Meghan Johnson (formerly known at Spalding as Meghan Taneyhill), has been a nurse for over 16 years. Most of her career has been in cardiology, from critical care settings to home health. From graduating from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, and then obtaining a second bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Stevenson University, Meghan believes that a significant part of her success as a nurse stems from the teachers, memories, and principles she acquired at Archbishop Spalding.
While interviewing Meghan, she stated that she had a teacher who really pushed her and inspired her to pursue the career she’s in and made her the person she is today. She highlighted Mr. Fisher, a science teacher who had an amazing personality and a positive perspective on life and science. His optimism and numerous facts on the importance of science to everyday life sparked Meghan’s interest in science and her desire to pursue a career in nursing.
Throughout her life, Meghan has always kept the term “One in Christ” close to her heart. When I asked her how she had used the term “One in Christ” beyond high school, she said that it had led her to be more patient and generous. She has been more compassionate, which has led people to believe that she is a very accomplished nurse. Outside of her nursing career, Meghan also raises a beautiful family. She is a wife and mother of three daughters, ages one, three, and seven, and she strives to be the best wife and mother by always implementing Spalding’s motto: “One in Christ.”
While in high school, Meghan played field hockey and lacrosse, which ultimately led to an athletic scholarship for her to play lacrosse in college. She believes her discipline and strong teamwork skills (learned from Spalding) have also contributed to how open and successful she is in her career. She states that a crucial part of becoming a nurse is being open and respectful towards everyone.
Ultimately, Spalding played a significant role in shaping her into the person she is today. It challenged her intellectually, emotionally, and socially. It provided her with the knowledge and drive to pursue a career she’s more than happy with, while also enhancing her confidence in her communication and teamwork skills. She says she still reconnects with her Spalding friends, and it has been amazing to see how the school has challenged everyone to become better versions of themselves.
