It does not take a rocket scientist to explain that the Spalding Robotics Team has been on a tear lately. Following an impressive victory at the Chesapeake District Championships over Spring Break, the Cavineers travelled to Detroit, Michigan, for the FIRST World Championships hosted from April 24th-27th. Held at the Cobo Center, the event consisted of over 400 FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) teams, as well as several hundred FLL (FIRST LEGO League) and FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge) teams. Simply making the Championship was a stellar accomplishment, as Spalding was the only team to represent Maryland in their division.

Competing in the Daly division, the Cavineers were also one of four teams in their division representing the Chesapeake District. The Cavs showed off their talents well during qualifying, ranking 20th out of 68 teams in Offensive Power Rating. After a strong run, Team 4541 was picked to join the fifth seeded alliance along with a fellow Chesapeake District team in ILite Robotics. After their performance in the District Championship, Spalding was picked to play defense during the competition.

The alliance ended up being eliminated in the quarterfinals, but the Cavineers deserve a lot of credit for a wonderful season that ended on the national level. A substantial group of the student body helped build and maintain the robot for peak performance, and they should certainly be proud to see the results of a season that included many late nights and long hours. Although improvement might be difficult, there is no question that the Cavs will come back next year stronger than ever and ready to build on their best. Congratulations to everyone who was part of such a historic season!
