In March, the Model UN club sent eight students to New York City for the National High School Model United Nations conference. Archbishop Spalding students represented the Republic of Singapore, a small island nation just off the tip of the Southeast Asian landmass, on seven different UN committees.

The Model UN students took part in debate at the UN Conference on Trade and Development, the UN Economic and Social Commission in Asia and the Pacific, the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, and the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.

During the opening ceremonies, we heard from the U.S. ambassador to the UN, Jonathan Cohen. Throughout the weekend, the group participated in rigorous debate and worked closely with others to solve world problems. The Spalding group met students from several other countries, including Italy, Guatemala, and Brazil. They also met with an ambassador from the Singaporean Permanent Mission to the UN, Ms. Yasmin Ali. They received the opportunity to ask her questions ranging from Singapore’s foreign policies to what it is like to be an ambassador. Throughout the conference, students had a lot of fun and learned about international policies while working to solve problems that plague the world.
