The music department “pledged allegiance to the band” as they made their way to New York City on October 17th to see School of Rock. School of Rock, composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and written by Glenn Slater, is based on the movie of the same name. It tells the story of Dewey Finn, a striving rock star who poses as a substitute teacher at a fancy prep school. After realizing that his students have amazing music potential, he enters his class in the Battle of the Bands. The musical teaches everyone that all you need to do is listen to yourself and others and follow your dreams in order to live your best life.

The show itself is a mind-blowing riot. Many of the actors, who are elementary and middle school aged, played their own instruments while singing, acting, and dancing their little brains out, which is very outstanding for kids their age. All of the music and songs, such as “Stick It to the Man”, “If Only You Would Listen”, “You’re in the Band”, and “Where Did the Rock Go”, truly stood out as musical masterpieces. The style of music ranged from classic Broadway to head-banging rock’n’roll, which really shows the diversity of the musical artistry.

Many music students loved the show, saying it was the best musical they have ever seen! Many others said they really enjoyed the whole trip as a whole, their only criticism being they never wanted to leave New York City and the Winter Garden Theatre! All of the students loved bonding with each other while exploring the Big Apple. All in all, one trip down, many more to come.
