Catholic Schools Week at Spalding was a meaningful time for students, faculty, and staff to unite in their faith. Throughout the week of January 27-31, the Spalding community participated in various activities that reflected the values of our school, with a focus on prayer, reflection, and appreciation for our community.
The week started with our Prayer Around the Pole event in honor of Veterans Day. Students, teachers, and families gathered in a circle around our flagpole to offer prayers for the brave men and women who have served our country. This unity reminds us of the importance of faith in honoring those who serve.
Following this, we attended a special Mass celebrated by Fr. Luke. This was a beautiful celebration of our faith, reminding us that it is a privilege to participate in Catholic school. It reinforced the values of love, service, and gratitude. At this Mass, we celebrated two very important individuals. The first was Mrs. Hohman, who is part of our cafeteria staff and continues to make Spalding a brighter place. She was awarded the Kathy Sanders Spirit of Spalding award. Her compassion, dedication, and attitude perfectly exemplify what we should all strive for. Second, we celebrated Mr. Heming, our guitar teacher, with the Teacher of the Year Award for his continuing dedication to fostering a nurturing environment for his students.
This was followed by an empowering speech by Ms. Edmondson, the coach of the field hockey team and head of the physical education department. She was a Spalding student, and her speech reminded us of the value of a Catholic school community. She stated, “Catholic education is about more than just academics — it’s about integrity, resilience, faith, and community. Archbishop Spalding isn’t just a school; it’s a home that shapes who we are and who we become. My hope is that every student embraces these values and carries them into the world because that’s how we truly make a difference.”
Finally, the week ended with a dress-down day for students.
Isa Magana, ‘26, has gone to Catholic school all her life. She states, “Catholic Schools Week has always been a time where the community comes together. It is a pillar of the Catholic education experience.”
