Water Polo has become a sensation on the Spalding campus with the team’s first season six years ago. Spalding is the only school with a co-ed water polo team in the MIAA conference. With the addition of a massive tournament called Beast of The East, the men’s and women’s teams competed.
The women’s team went 6-0 against some of the most challenging teams on the East Coast and won their respective division in Flight 1. Senior and Captain Kaitlin Elias led the charge with younger sister Megan Elias (25 Goals), and the girls scored 64 goals on the weekend. With their morale high, they were able to upset their entire division and proceed to the championship game. Competing against a great opposing team in a clash, the girls came out on top in a thrilling game, scoring 11-10 and winning the entire tournament!
The men’s team went 5-1 on the weekend, ultimately winning their division in Flight 1. With Captain and Senior Blake Trice (21 goals), Captain and Senior Goalie Thomas Hayes (58 saves), Junior Wyatt McKeating playing with three broken vertebrates in his back (23 goals), and Sophomore Ian Nollete (25 goals) leading the team, the team was able to sweep the competition by putting up a total of 85 goals combined during the tournament. While sweeping the entire division with little defiance, they earned themselves a spot in the championship game. With a thrilling first half of the championship game, the men’s team pulled through and beat the opposing team 14-5, taking home the championship for Spalding.
