The “Dirt Cavs”
April 23, 2022
The Spalding Varsity baseball team has been dominating their competition to start their 2022 season, picking up right where they left off last season. The Cavs jumped to a 17-4 record, including a 8-0 record in the MIAA. To get a behind-the-scenes look at what makes the program as dominant as they are, I interviewed Junior first baseman/catcher, Michael Joseph.
When asked about his favorite part of being a part of the “Dirt Cavs”, Michael said that the camaraderie between the players is second to none.
“All great championship teams have players that mesh well together and I can confidently say that is the environment we have on the Archbishop Spalding baseball team,” he said. “There are no cliques or polarizing teammates, rather everyone supports one another like family”.
When asked about what separates Spalding’s baseball team from other teams in the conference, Michael stated that, “From the dugout to on the field, we are constantly cheering each other on and picking up teammates when they make a mistake or do not execute … When you watch our team play, you can not tell whether we are winning or losing because we always keep the same high-powered positive energy.”
He went on to say, “My favorite part about our team is that we pray as a team before and after games. One in Christ!” This sort of environment is truly inspiring, and it embodies Spalding’s Athletic ideals.
After coming so close to winning the championship last year, Michael said, “I have no doubt that we will be back in the championship game this year, because nobody works harder than our team. From offseason lifts, speed and agility workouts, practices, extra work, you name it. Everyone is pushing each other to become a better player at practice, which makes us a more complete, well rounded, competitive squad that you do not want to run into come playoff time.”
